[The truth is far worse than anything Claudia had suspected. The sight of her body when she looks down at herself, wire and film and starkly green liquid, is enough to make her knees weak and her stomach churn. Her breathing—does this body really need to breathe, or is that just some pointless action she takes out of habit?—comes in short, anxious bursts.]

[But she crushes down the initial panic, and her desire to cry from—if nothing else—stress. In the last few years, she has learned well enough how to stifle her emotions and ignore them until a more convenient time. She feels hollow and numb as she lingers outside the door of her room, not acting, merely observing her surroundings as they are now. She wants to go farther, but it's night. There's a chance the monsters might have disappeared as well—but there's also a chance they might not have. She doesn't even know if she can be revived, with things the way they are now.]

[Then again— What does her life truly matter now?]

[She steps forward, to find the elevator.]

[As Claudia steps forward, she would find her passage blocked by one violet construct just sitting there on the ground staring off numbing into the distance.]

[Even like this, with her mind set on her own mission, she isn't callous enough to ignore someone obviously upset. She doesn't know if this is someone she has met before or a stranger, but regardless, she can't simply tell him to move out of her way and pass by him as though she had seen nothing at all.]

[She crouches down beside him.]

Hello.

[It takes a moment for Rolo to register that someone is speaking to him. He looks over. Green. Did he know anyone with a green collar? He can't remember. He doesn't care anymore. Nothing matters anymore. The voice is unfamiliar though.]

... hello.

[The voice is unfamiliar, but that doesn't stop her from setting a hand on his shoulder.]

You should move somewhere safer.

[Not that the dorms were particularly unsafe, generally, but sitting in the middle of the hallway like this, when everyone was in this state of mind... She worried someone would lash out and hurt him.]

[he glances over at the hand then back up at her]

What does it matter anymore... whether this place is safe or not...

[They don't die here after all. They just move his soul into a different wireframe...]

Even so, it's not pleasant to be hurt or killed, is it?

[Her tone is gentle and coaxing, not unlike the way a mother would speak to her child.]

I suppose... But I don't think there are any monsters out at the moment so I'm fine.

[Her tone is somewhat reassuring...]

Maybe so, but that's not what I'm worried about right now. People are upset and not thinking rationally now, so I'm concerned someone might lash out and hurt you.

It's alright... I can protect myself. I won't be killed so easily.

[Then after a moment's pause, he looks over with a bit of curiosity for this has not yet cease to amaze him.] Why are you so concerned for my well being though? We don't even know each other.

[That question just makes her feel a little sad. It seems like an awfully cynical way to feel.]

It doesn't matter whether or not I know you. You're a person, so I don't want to see you be hurt.

[A person. Yes, a person, not a tool.]

You are the kind who cares about everyone then? [And he doesn't mean it sarcastically or anything.] But haven't you ever cared about the wrong person and got hurt because of it?

[For a second, she doesn't answer. Then, she shifts, moving to kneel rather than crouch.]

I do care, and I'd rather be hurt than allow myself to become hard-hearted.

... but why? Why would you do that? How does it benefit you?

Because it makes me happy to care about people and be cared about in return. Maybe people hurt each other sometimes, but I would be sad all the time if I didn't have anyone I was close to.

... [Nope, he still can't get it...]

... do you have someone you are close to here?

[She nods at that. Simply and surely:]

I do.

Who is it?

Well... There's a man that I knew in my world. [Automatically, she smiles, though she can't imagine what it looks like on her face now. It probably wouldn't be a completely happy expression, even if it were clearly visible.] The one here doesn't remember me, but he's been very kind about the situation, and I care about him very much.

[Rolo thought about it for a moment.]

Why doesn't he remember you? Is he your lover?

Ah, that's— No, it's nothing like that! [She feels a little embarrassed saying it, and she's sure she'd be blushing if things were as they normally are.] He's a friend and an ally of mine. But he's from a world different than mine, where we never met.

[He silent for a moment as he considers this.]

I see. But there was a version of him in the world you're from.

[Someone seems to have beaten her to it--there's another construct of the same color as her getting ready to use it. It does, however, spare a glance behind it, and eventually notices it's not alone.]

Hey. [...Something doesn't seem right about this one--not that she can tell considering current circumstances. Well, wouldn't hurt to ask what they're up to.] You need something?

I was going to see if there's anything to be found in the rest of the Tower.

[The reply is simple and matter-of-fact, if not a little detached.]
